The word psychometric basically means the measurement of the psychological attributes. These attributes could be cognitive skills, aptitude, ability, personality, or interest. What companies look for in psychometric tests is a comprehensive understanding of an individual’s personality, skills, and abilities. Employers who preferably use psychometric assessment for recruitment gain a better overall evaluation of the candidate and hopefully in the process secure the adequate fit for the role.
The reason why psychometric assessments are used for recruitment and selection purposes is the results have been statistically proven and correlated with high job performance. Psychometric assessment is now employed by over 80 per cent of the Fortune 500 companies in the USA and by over 75 per cent of the Times Top 100 companies in the UK. Information technology companies, management consultancies, local authorities, financial institutions, the civil service, police forces, fire services and the armed forces all make extensive use of psychometric testing.
Countries like India are now rapidly adopting the utilization of psychometric assessment tools. A 2016 survey estimated that 18 per cent of companies use psychometric tests in their hiring process, a percentage that is growing at the speed of 10-15 per cent annually. While some are using the psychometric analysis to gauge the P-E fit, many are using it to spot candidates with leadership potentials at the time of promotions.
The report reveals that one-third of the companies are yet to explore psychometrics. A majority of organizations though, use psychometric assessments in different ways and apply it across the talent cycle of an individual. According to the study, 56 percent of organizations use psychometric assessment tools.
The dominant area where psychometric assessments are used is while recruiting and selecting talent. The study reveals that 77 per cent of organizations use the best psychometric test tools for candidate assessment at the senior management level. The number stands at 65 per cent, 74 per cent and 81 per cent for middle management, junior management and entry-level candidates respectively.
But there is still an impressive scope for using psychometric assessments tools in the areas of talent development, High Potential identification and development, and succession planning, as the application of psychometrics is average.
Psychometric tests will become imperative for organisations to follow, as social distancing is going to be the new normal and recruiters and assessors will not have to face interactions with the potential candidates, so technological platforms providing the Psychometric tests will help the organisations to find the right fit. Furthermore, employee engagement activities training and development activities will become progressive with top psychometric tests providers in India.
